Protest Rights Tracker

A collaborative initiative tracking the Brazilian National Congress’s recent legislative efforts to restrict and protect the right to protest

A Portrait of Repression

The “Protest Rights Tracker” transforms dry legislative data into compelling visual evidence. As users navigate the dashboard, they are confronted with a mosaic of real-world police suppression records. In this interface, each image is more than just a depiction of conflict; it is a direct representation of a specific bill currently moving through the National Congress.

We designed this interface to materialize the scale of the threat to protest rights in Brazil: every piece of the mosaic is a bill, and as the screen fills up, the systematic strategy to criminalize the streets, pervading Brazil’s legislative branch today, becomes undeniable.

Translating Complexity into Social Mobilization

A joint initiative between ARTIGO 19 and the Rede Justiça Criminal, this portal was born from the urgent need to make legislative debates accessible to everyone. 59 proposals were tracked within the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, translating dense “legalese” into synthetic, accessible language. The goal was to demystify the impact of these bills and move the conversation beyond courtrooms and government offices, effectively engaging civil society in the defense of a pillar of democracy: the freedom of assembly.
